Canaan Fir (Abies balsamea phanerolepsis) is available at Pound's Nursery as a balled tree or cut tree. it is one of the three varieties of Balsam Fir, a recognized sub-species of Canadian Balsam Fir, a cousin of Fraser Fir. Canaan grows in isolated pockets in the mountains of West Virginia and western Virginia. The tree takes its common name from the Canaan Valley, northeast of Elkins, West Virginia. Coming from harsh mountain swamp, it is naturally adapted to wet sites and late frosts. Canaan Fir does best in deep loam soil; however, the tree will grow in a variety of soil types, with the exception of dry upland sites on a western exposure. Canaan Fir is very similar to Fraser Fir. It has good color, density, aroma and deep color with foliage and growth habits similar to Fraser Fir.
