A real Christmas tree is an all-American, recyclable, and renewable resource.

Pound's Nursery will be open for retail each weekend only (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. during the Christmas season.

All trees are grown at Pound's Nursery - over 500 acres of beauty. For a traditional holiday, select a fresh cut Christmas tree or a live balled tree to plant after Christmas and watch it grow. We are open in the spring and autumn to supply your requirements for balled trees. We dig by order only. Call for sizes, prices, and to place your order at 740-745-5946 or 1-800-722-2982 (Toll-Free).

Canaan Fir is now available at Pound's Nursery as a cut Christmas tree from 4 ft. - 14 ft. Canaan Fir (a variety of Balsam Fir) is very similar to Fraser Fir. It has good density, aroma, and deep color.

Also made at the Nursery are beautiful Fraser Fir and Canaan Fir wreaths and swags that are decorated with holly, bright ribbons, and pine cones. Grave blankets and Grave Mounds are available made from Blue Spruce and decorated with white doves, pine cones, and red ribbon bows.

Make an annual trip to Pound's Nursery where beautiful trees and warm hospitality is the specialty. Any questions, please call 740-745-5946, 740-745-2982, or 1-800-722-2982 (Toll-Free).

In the beginning...

The use of a Christmas Tree began early in the seventeenth century in Strasbourg, France, spreading from there throughout Germany and then into Northern Europe.

In England in 1841 Prince Albert placed it in Windsor Castle. From England the tradition came to the United States with the immigrants. In 1842 a Charles Minnegerode introduced the custom in Williamsburg, Virginia. The tree was decorated with strings of popcorn, gilded nuts, and lighted candles.

The fourteenth President of the United States, Franklin Pierce, in the 1850's was the first President to set up a Christmas Tree in the White House. Now each year it is estimated that thirty-five million American families bring a Real Christmas Tree into their home and with its freshness and fragrance, it becomes a focal point for the celebration of the holidays.

Complete Maintenance Program

No matter what kind of Christmas Tree you choose, be it a pine, spruce, or fir tree, a Complete Maintenance Program is followed at Pound's Nursery to produce a healthy tree.

The tree starts as a seed in an outdoor nursery bed. After being in the nursery bed for two to four years, it arrives at Pound's Nursery. The field where the tree is to be planted is prepared by discing, and having the proper amount of fertilizer applied. The tree is then placed in the field by a tree planter.

A tree must survive many threats as it grows such as the weather (hail, rain, drought), insects, disease, theft and an overgrowth of vines and weeds.

Once ready for harvest it is first tagged with different colors of ribbon denoting the kind and size of tree. Next it is cut. Then the trees are hauled by tractors, trucks, and trailers to the area where you can choose your perfect tree. Next it is placed on a shaker to remove excess needles and bundled for its journey. At last to be decorated with your favorite decorations.

Choosing the Right Tree for You

  • Fraser Fir (A Favorite Tree)

Fraser Fir has a distinctive aroma which lasts long after being cut. The branches are very sturdy, which allows it to hold heavy ornaments. The needles are soft but firm - being 1" to 1-1/2" long. The color is dark green with silvery blue underneath. Fraser Fir has excellent needle retention

  • Canaan Fir (The new addition to the Christmas Tree arena)

Canaan Fir is a variety of Balsam Fir. It is very similar to Fraser Fir. The tree has good density, great aroma, and deep color. The branches are strong, making decorating easy and enjoyable. Needle retention is very good.

  • White Pine (The Fluffy Tree)

White Pine is soft with needles which are 3-5" long and five in a bundle. The tree is easy to decorate; however, heavy ornaments tend to pull down the soft branches. It retains needles well. It has been reported that some people with allergies will have no reaction to the White Pine.

  • Balsam Fir (The Old Fashioned Tree)

Balsam Fir has soft, dark green foliage. The needles are flattened and are about 3/4" long. It has a distinctive "Balsam" aroma. The branches are sturdy, and the needle retention is excellent. It has been a favorite Christmas Tree for a long time.

  • Colorado Blue Spruce (The Unique Tree)

The Blue Spruce has stiff sharp pointed needles about 1" long and prickly. It has a strong limbed-tiered branch structure. The Blue Spruce ranges in color from dark green to silver blue. The needle retention is considered fair. The heavy dense limbs make decorating easy. It is also a good tree (Balled and Burlapped) for planting after Christmas - thus being able to enjoy it for years to come as you watch it continue to grow.

Test a Cut Tree for Freshness

  1. Gently grasp a branch between your thumb and forefinger and pull it toward you. Very few needles should come off in your hand.

  2. Shake or bounce the tree on its stump. You should not see an excessive amount of green needles fall to the ground.

Nothing Says Christmas More Than a Real Tree!

A Real Christmas Tree becomes the center of holiday decorations. It makes a home a special place. To everyone that enters your home it says, "It's Christmas".

Fresh green wreaths, roping, and swags also bring the sights and smells of the season to your home and the Real Tree helps us to focus our thoughts toward the celebration of life and hope and renewal.

Remember to add a few distinct ornaments to your tree each year.

We wish everyone the peace of the season and continuing success in the new year.
